#Freebie Friday – 100 Essential Tips for Microsoft Office 2010

Microsoft Office
This week's Freebie Friday - 100 Essential Tips for Microsoft Office 2010 comes from PC Magazine. Most of us use Office, and most of us could make better use of it, too. Check out these tips, sorted by application to learn basic tricks and advanced tips for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access. The editors have shaken down the programs and pinpointed 100 tips and tricks to help put you back in command.  These tips cover not only the basics, like deleting that infuriating line that appears when you type one too many hyphens in Word (one that I find especially annoying), to more advanced tricks, such as connecting your email to social websites and services. They've also included some tips about features that you might not know to search…

QuickBooks Payroll Tip – Voiding Paychecks

Payroll Tips
A QuickBooks payroll tip about voiding paychecks - you should be very careful when choosing to void a paycheck because payroll checks have associated tax and other liability calculations and payments that need to be taken into consideration and it will result in changing payroll year-to-date amounts. A common, and acceptable, reason to void a paycheck would be if the employee or someone else in your company notices an error on the check before it is cashed - in this situation voiding the check is acceptable because it will not have a negative impact on payroll liability calculations - because those liabilities have not yet been paid. Be VERY careful about voiding a check if the employee has never picked it up - or it cannot be delivered to the…

Embezzlement, It CAN Happen To You – Tips For Prevention

General QuickBooks News, QuickBooks Setup & Cleanup
As a busy business owner it is quite easy to fall into the bad habit of simply turning over your business’s accounting to someone else; because your time is best spent in the field and not in the office doing paperwork.  Not only is this a bad habit, it can also become a dangerous situation. In the course of my bookkeeping career, now over 30 years, I’ve seen many instances of employee theft – from the simple act of people taking home office supplies in the fall for their children, employees giving themselves unauthorized raises, bookkeepers embezzling money from the business, accountants “cooking the books”, and even family members “making a mess of things”. Whether it's theft of money, supplies, inventory, equipment, or intellectual property, nearly every small business will…
